In this interview Randy discusses SUNY Canton’s transition to NCAA Division III. Canton is in Year Two of the NCAA III four-year membership process. SUNY Canton was a two-year community college for much of its history, but as the institution transitioned to four-year bachelor’s programs, its athletics program needed to transition as well. Randy talks about the discussions and decisions that led the institution to NCAA Division III and also shares insights into successfully navigating the requirements for NCAA membership.
Randy Sieminski began his tenure as SUNY Canton athletic director in August 2010 and has been employed at SUNY Canton since October 2005. Sieminski has overseen the dramatic growth of the athletics department from nine sports to 14 and from 126 student-athletes to nearly 300. He has also guided the department through its transition to the NCAA. Some of the athletic department’s recent accomplishments include hosting the 2012 & 2013 USCAA Volleyball Nationals, ECAC Championship berths for men’s soccer (2012) and men’s lacrosse (2013), numerous individual student-athlete academic and athletic awards, and many others. In May 2013, SUNY Canton hosted the regional Special Olympics for the first time in school history. It was a remarkably rewarding event for everyone involved, and SUNY Canton plans to host this event annually.
Prior to joining the athletic department, Sieminski was the Director of Public Relations at SUNY Canton. During his tenure promoting the college through media/public relations, marketing and admissions, the College experienced an 86 percent increase in applications and set new enrollment records for several consecutive years. Sieminski also led the College’s branding and marketing efforts, including a re-design of the College’s website, admissions publications, and advertising campaigns. He has also served as Asst. Vice President for Advancement and Director of Admissions (2009-10).
