Kirby is the Director of Athletics at NCAA Division II Cal State University Monterey Bay. Kirby discusses his departments avid use of social media to help promote, recruit and even raise money. He also gives some great advice about leadership, breaking into college athletics and his on-going desire to keep learning.

Entering his fourth year as Athletics Director and 11th overall at Cal State Monterey Bay, Kirby Garry has played a key role in shaping nearly every aspect of Otter Athletics as an NCAA DII intercollegiate athletics program. In the process, he has emerged as nationally respected leader in athletics administration, becoming an influential voice on topics of student-athlete well being, development, marketing and social media.
Garry provides leadership and support for the Otters’ 13 sports as well as the department’s more than 40 full and part-time administrative and coaching staff members.
A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Garry was a football team captain and All-North Central Conference wide receiver at the University of North Dakota. During his student-athlete career, UND won three NCC Championships (1993, 1994, 1995) and twice reached the Division II semi-finals (’93, ’94).
Garry graduated cum laude from the University of North Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in social science and received his master’s degree from the University of South Dakota in athletic administration.
