Avoiding the Pizza Party Syndrome
Many SAAC groups operate as a social group to build community among student-athletes. That is fine, but it underutilizes the power of SAAC. Many SAACs suffer because of a lack of structure and guidance. It is important to clearly articulate the role and expectations for SAAC, especially the officers. Providing a committed and capable advisor/mentor for your SAAC will help keep the group focused and give them needed support to develop and grow. Too often, SAACs are left to fend for themselves and wander aimlessly with no direction, disinterested participants and low or no expectations from athletics administrations.
Moving Toward Effectiveness
Investing time and energy in your SAAC organization will benefit student-athletes and the entire athletics program. It must start with clarifying what SAAC should be responsible for and identifying what outcomes you desire for student-athletes. A committed and capable advisor/mentor must be identified and held accountable for SAAC’s development.
