About
With increasing budget pressures, some institutions have dropped sport programs as a cost-saving measure. If you are in this situation, how should you go about the decision-making process? How do you evaluate which sports to eliminate and which ones to keep?
Directors of Athletics Gary Gray (Univ. of Alaska, Fairbanks) and Ken Ralph (Colorado College) have had to wrestle with this difficult situation. You will hear from each of them about their unique circumstances that led to decisions to eliminate programs, and their decision-making processes.
Gray dropped a program while he was Director of Athletics at Montana State University, Billings, and over the past two years has faced extreme budget pressures at UA- Fairbanks that led campus administrators to raise the topic of dropping sports programs as a cost-savings measure. Each environment had its unique circumstances, but Gray will discuss to very different approaches to engaging campus and community members in the process.
Ralph’s program at Colorado College operates in a very different environment, including the fact that CC is a private liberal arts college with a strong endowment, as opposed to a public university like Alaska, Fairbanks. CC decided to drop its football program after much debate and a thorough assessment of its situation.
During this webinar, scheduled for one hour, you hear Gray and Ralph discuss a number of relevant questions, concerns and topics relevant to decisions to eliminate sport programs, including:
- What leads to a campus entertaining the idea to eliminate sport programs?
- Who is involved in these discussions?
- What evaluation or assessment process is used to determine potential sports for elimination.
- How transparent these discussions and the assessment process should be.
- How athletics directors can reach out to others in the industry to seek counsel and advice.
- Making the final decision.
- Ultimate outcomes realized from elimination of a sport program.
There will be time allotted at the conclusion of the panel discussion for audience Q&A.
